A bright conservatory can be one of the best rooms in the house, until the glare makes it hard to relax or the furnishings begin to fade. If you are asking how much damaging UV light gets through a normal conservatory roof, the honest answer is: some can get through, but the amount depends heavily on whether the roof is glass or polycarbonate, its age, and any coatings or films already in place.

The key point is that a conservatory roof may reduce ultraviolet light without removing it altogether. That means it can still be sensible to manage direct sun, particularly if you use the room for long periods, have young children or pets in the space, or want to protect flooring, upholstery and artwork.

Which UV light is most likely to get through?

Ultraviolet light is usually split into UVA and UVB. UVB is the type most closely associated with sunburn. Standard glass blocks the vast majority of UVB, which is reassuring for anyone sitting beneath a glazed conservatory roof.

UVA is different. It penetrates further into the skin and is a major contributor to premature skin ageing. It is also particularly relevant to fading because it can affect fabrics, wood finishes, carpets and furniture over time. Glass conservatory roofs

Double glazing improves insulation, but it does not automatically mean complete UV protection. The gap between the panes is mainly there to improve thermal performance. The type of glass, coatings and any interlayer are what make the bigger difference to light transmission and UV filtering.

Tinted or solar-control glass can help cut glare and reduce solar gain. However, tint alone should not be treated as proof of a particular UV performance. If this is a priority, ask the installer or manufacturer for the glazing specification rather than relying on appearance.

Polycarbonate conservatory roofs

Polycarbonate roofing is widely used because it is lightweight and economical, but its performance depends on the panel construction and the protective layers applied during manufacture. Many modern polycarbonate sheets include a UV-protective outer coating to stop the panel itself from deteriorating in sunlight. They may also reduce UV entering the room, but levels vary considerably between products.

Multiwall and opal polycarbonate often diffuse light more effectively than clear sheets. That can make the room feel less harsh and reduce glare, although it does not always provide the same appearance or view of the sky as glass. Older panels may have become discoloured, scratched or less effective over time, especially where protective coatings have worn.

Roof windows, side glazing and open doors matter too

The roof is not the only route for sunlight. Large side windows and French doors can bring in strong, low-angle sun, especially in the morning or late afternoon. A roof shade alone will make a major difference to overhead glare and heat, but the room may need a combination of roof and side shading for the best all-round result.

UV, heat and glare are related but not the same

It is easy to blame every conservatory problem on UV, but the issues are slightly different. UV is linked to skin exposure and fading. Visible light creates glare. Infrared energy and solar gain are big reasons why a conservatory can become uncomfortably hot.

A roof can admit enough light to make you squint, enough solar energy to warm the room rapidly, and only a comparatively small amount of UVB. That is why choosing a shading solution only on the basis of UV claims can miss the wider comfort problem.

For most homeowners, the practical aim is a room that remains bright but is calmer, cooler and more usable. Reducing direct sunlight also helps protect interiors, even where the roof glazing already blocks a substantial share of UV.

Signs your conservatory needs better sun control

Fading is often gradual, so it is worth checking the areas that receive the most direct sun. Move a cushion or picture frame and compare the covered section with the exposed material. Noticeable differences in colour can suggest that UVA and strong visible light are taking their toll.

You may also find that the room is pleasant on an overcast day but uncomfortable in bright sunshine, or that you avoid sitting beneath certain roof panels at particular times. These are signs that glare and solar gain are affecting how you use the space, whatever the exact UV transmission figure may be.

Practical ways to reduce UV exposure and fading

The right solution depends on the roof, the direction it faces and what you want from the room. South-facing conservatories often need the strongest protection in the middle of the day, while west-facing rooms can suffer from intense late-afternoon sun.
